BASIC HANDGUN TRAINING INFORMATION Our Basic Handgun Training consists of a ?ground up? approach to shooting. We begin with safety, safety, safety, and continue to emphasize safety throughout all phases of instruction. There is never any excuse to handle any firearm in an unsafe manner. If you think you can get away with unsafe gun handling, our classes are not for you. We then move to stance, body position, grip, sight picture, trigger control, and other aspects of handgun handling which will allow the shooter to successfully use a gun in self defense. Our training is self defense oriented, and we strive to teach techniques on the range which can be easily used in real life situations if necessary. Our training begins at the kitchen table, yours or ours, depending upon your location. We do not believe in starting instruction with live ammunition on a range. At home, we can speak calmly and quietly about applying the principles of gun handling without having live ammunition being fired all around us. We practice our techniques at home with unloaded guns, and only leave for the range when the student is comfortable properly handling the unloaded gun.
WE DO NOT LET A STUDENT GO TO STEP B UNTIL HE OR SHE IS COMFORTABLE WITH STEP A!
WE DO NOT RUSH OUR INSTRUCTION, AND ADAPT OUR PACE TO THE STUDENT?S PROGRESS.
After all of the above (usually one to three hours, depending upon the student), we go to a range where we put all of the instruction into practice with live ammunition. The instructor is always next to the student, observing, making corrections, suggestions, and always enforcing safety rules. The student may fire as much ammunition as he or she is comfortable with. It is our goal of this session that the student becomes comfortable with the gun, proficient in the basic safe handling of the gun, and able to shoot well enough to engage a man sized target at usual self defense distances. We want students to lose their initial fear of the gun, and to overcome their aversion to recoil and other distracting aspects of shooting. Of course, we always enjoy seeing students with big smiles on their faces saying, ?When can we do this again?? Our fee for this 4 to 5 hour class is $100.00 per student. Some other instructors charge this much or more for a one hour session, but we refuse to rush a new student and believe that time and attention are absolutely required for proper instruction of a beginner with a firearm. In addition, you will pay for your range fee and the instructor?s, usually around $20.00 each, and pay for any ammunition which you use on the range.
TEXAS LICENSE TO CARRY HANDGUN CLASS INFORMATION (Formerly known as Concealed Handgun License) Go to my website www.pistolerohandguntraining.com, and go to the Links page. The first link will take you to the DPS website page where you will create an account and fill out online forms for your state application. Almost everything is done electronically now, thank goodness. After you complete the application, you will give the state your credit card for about $140.00 for the application fee and background check. There are a few lower fees for senior citizens, veterans and the indigent. Once you have filled out the forms, given them your credit card, and submitted everything online, they will send you a link to a company which does electronic fingerprints as part of your application. You will use the link to go to that company's website and find their location closest to you. You will make an appointment with them to have your electronic fingerprints and a digital photograph made which they will send directly to the state. The cost for this is $10 payable to the company. After that, all you have to do is take your class. The class is required by law to be 4 to 6 hours, not including the time spent on the range for your proficiency exam. In order to save you time on the date of your class, we can arrange to go to the range together beforehand and fire the qualification course. If we do that, once the class is over and you have taken the short written exam, I can sign your form attesting to your satisfactory completion and you will then send that in to the state. Our class will run from 9:00 in the morning until around 3:30 or so, depending upon how long we take for breaks and lunch. I normally have pizza brought in for lunch so that we can eat quickly and continue the class without dragging things out. You will be required to go onto the range with your instructor and shoot a prescribed 50 round course of fire for a score. If you are not already proficient with your handgun, we suggest that you arrange to take a Basic Handgun class from us, or from another qualified instructor prior to class and the range proficiency exam. In addition to the fees mentioned above to the state and the fingerprint company, you will owe us $100 per person (subject to any coupons or other discounts). Remember, we do not receive a penny from the state or anyone else for our services. You will need to pay your range fee of about $25 or so (again, payable to the range, not to us) and buy a box of ammunition for whatever gun you will be using on the proficiency exam.
You bet! Every home should have a shotgun for home defense, and people who are trained in its proper use. We love to work with students on shotgun and rifle training as well as handgun use.
